May

May has been designated National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). Although skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, the likelihood of cure is high if lesions are detected and treated at an early stage. Volunteer member dermatologists throughout the country will conduct free skin cancer screenings in their communities. The Centers for Disease Control's National Skin Cancer Prevention Education Program, in collaboration with AAD, the American Cancer Society, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Weather Service, state health departments, universities, and other public and private organizations, focuses on increasing public awareness about skin cancer risk factors and appropriate sun protection behaviors.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. In recognition of this, we have included a number of articles pertaining to the prevention and early detection of this malignancy that we think you will find useful. There are over 147,000 new cases and 57,000 deaths annually from this disease in the US alone. Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable of all cancers. Talk to your physician about your screening options and how you can decrease your risk of developing this disease.
